Japan Household Panel Survey on Consumer Preferences and Satisfaction (JHPS-CPS)
We will suspend the survey 'Consumer Preferences and Satisfaction in Daily Life' after the 2024 survey. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the respondents and stakeholders who have cooperated with us over the years. Regarding the management of data and the provision of individual response data, we will continue to handle them at the Institute of Social and Economic Research, Osaka University. However, please note that we may not be able to answer questions regarding the survey forms or data, so please understand in advance.
Overview
Objectives
Preference Parameters Study of Osaka University is conducted mainly with an aim to calculate parameters of preferences defining utility function; time preference, risk aversion, habit formation, externality, carrying out the following research projects.
Survey items
  • Questions regarding risk aversion, time preference, habit formation, externality
  • Quesitions regarding comprehensive nad basic attributes such as houshold composition, consumption, and income of respondents in addition to their sociodemographic characterisitics.
Survey method
Japan
The panel survey has been conducted annually since 2003 using a random sample drawn from men and women aged 20-69 years old by a self-administered placement method.
Fresh samples were selected and added in respondents to the survey for wave 2004, 2006 and 2009.
The survey has been conducted by mail survey method since 2021.
USA
The panel survey has been conducted annually since 2005 using a random sample drawn from men and women aged 18-99 years old by a self-administered placement method. Fresh samples were selected and added in respondents to the survey for wave 2007, 2008 and 2009.
China
For the survey in the urban area, cross-sectional survey and panel survey are carried out. Regarding the cross-sectional survey, it was conducted in six cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan, Shenyang) in 2006 using a sample drawn from men and women aged 20-69 years old by an interview method. Regarding the panel survey, it has been conducted in six cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan, Shenyang) since 2009 using drawn from men and women aged 20-69 years old by an interview method. For the survey in the rural area, corss-sectional survey is carried out. Surveys were conducted in 2007 and 2010. Regarding the survey in 2007, samples of men and women aged 20-69 living in rural areas of two provinces are selected, and the interview method is employed. Regarding the sruvey in 2010, samples of men and women aged 20-69 living in rural areas of four provinces are selected, and the interview method is employed.
India
Urban area
For the sirvey in the urban area, panel survey has been conducted annually since 2009. Samples of men and women aged 20-69 living in urban areas of six cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Calcutta, Hyderabad) are selected, and the interview method is employed.
Rural area
For the survey in the rural area, it was first conducted in 2012. Sample of men and women aged 20-69 living in rural area of four cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Calcutta) are selected, and the interview method was employed. The survey has been conducted in 2013.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Data obtained from the Preference Parameters Study of Osaka University is provided only to researchers and graduate students affiliated with national, public, and private universities and research institutions only for nonprofit and academic purposes.
  • Micro datasets are available for academic research only. Applications to use the data for business or other purposes will not be approved.
  • Applicants are requested to fill in a research title and abstract (about 200 words) in the application form.
  • The data may only be used by the applicant.
  • Please include acknowledgement in your research papers that use the data. The precise wording of the acknowledgement is detailed in the Written Pledge which is a part of the application form.
  • Permission to use the data, when granted, is for a period of two years.
  • After the two-year period of authorized use comes to an end, applicants must submit a report to the Secretariat for Preference Parameters Study, ISER Osaka University. If at that time, an extension in the period of use is needed, an application for two-year extension may be submitted along with the report on use of the data up until then.

When your application is approved, we will send you the URL which links to the data download site via e-mail.

Please note that we are unable to answer any inquiries regarding these survey data due to the absence of the person in charge. Confidentiality
  • To maintain the confidentiality of the Micro Data survey respondents, only ten regional codes (Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Koshinetsu, Hokuriku, Tokai, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyusyu) are supplied with the provided data. Codes for prefectures and municipalities are deleted.
